THE PLASTIC FREE NOOSA PLAN
Plastic Free Noosa is a whole-of-community plan with a goal to reduce the use of identified single use plastic packaging in Noosa (by 50%) by November 2020.
To achieve this, we engage directly with food outlets, events, markets and other organisations to switch from single-use plastics to better alternatives. Our main focus is on reducing six single-use plastic items which represent the most problematic and prolific sources of the litter stream. These items are; water bottles, straws, coffee cups/lids, takeaway containers, food ware (cutlery, plates, cups etc) and plastic bags. These problem plastics also have alternative solutions available. In time this list of items and the sectors we operate in may expand.
our objectives are:
1 A minimum 50% overall (total) reduction in single-use plastic use by members by 30th November 2019.
2 A cleaner and less littered Noosa, an enhanced reputation as a tourist destination, and a more aware and prouder community prouder thatidentifies as a leader in environmental stewardship.
3 To assist with the improvement of Noosa's waste collection services.
4 To implement a plastic free plan that can expand over time and be a template for other communities to show how single-use plastics can be avoided.
how it works
Businesses and other organisations join up as a member and we help them work towards eliminating their single-use plastic items and replacing them with identified reusable or compostable alternatives. Those who significantly reduce their plastic use become 'Plastic Free Champions'. We have developed resources to help, including information on sourcing alternative products, material and certificates to display to customers, as well as created a system of promotional benefits to reward achievements.
Individuals can also sign up, reduce their own plastic and help to support our local business members.
our aim in 2019 is for:
1 The food retail sector to eliminate their use of our six identified single-use plastic items, replacing them with reusable or 100% compostable alternatives.
2 Festivals, events and markets to go plastic-free.
3 Individuals to reduce their plastic use and support our business members.
While we have set our current targets for this year, the plan will continue to grow long after this date, with new targets being set every year.
measuring our success
The success of the plan is measured by the number of local businesses/ events/ markets who sign up to the program, and the amount of plastic items removed from use by our members.
We obtain ordering data from members and calculate how many plastic items they have eliminated since starting the program. You can view the success of our first year in our 2018 Report.
